Creative journalling is a way of getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper in the way that works best for you! It encourages imagination and the use of creative thinking and your journal can be a trusted companion that helps you reflect on, and sort out your own thoughts and feelings.

Creative journalling can support and benefit you to:

  • Expand your awareness
  • Help to clarify your thoughts and feelings
  • Reduce stress
  • Increase your ability to solve problems more effectively
  • Improve your mental and physical health
  • Relieve stress, manage anxiety, and cope with mental health issues
  • Enhance problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Promote regular writing practice
  • Help build resilience
  • Increase self-awareness and self-reflection

There are varying forms of creative journalling and your journal can take on any form including: a scrapbook; a poetry journal; an art journal; a gratitude journal; a mind map or journal with prompts that provide you with a starting point for each session. There really are no rules for how you use your journal or how you organise your thoughts and the way you use your journal might change according to your daily needs and life experiences.

Some tips for getting started:

  • Select a journal that resonates with you. The key is to pick something that inspires you!
  • Start simple and don’t over think it.
  • Make a list of useful prompts to get the creative juices flowing! You could list three things you have achieved today or things you want to achieve tomorrow or in the future. Think about what advice you might give your younger self or what is the best advice you have ever received. Consider what you are grateful for.
  • Remember you are writing for your eyes only and there are no rules. Let go of any worries about spelling and grammar and just let your thoughts flow.
  • Creating a writing routine and scheduling time for you journal into your day can help you stay on track.

Have fun with it! Remember your journal is there for you, there is no pressure to be perfect or do it right just let go and go with the flow!
