The Benefits of Mindfulness

The Benefits of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is one of those buzz terms that everybody seems to be using right now but what does it actually mean and how can mindfulness help us with our wellbeing?

The dictionary definition of mindfulness is “the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm”.

Many of the ideas and practices of modern day mindfulness originate from Hinduism and Buddhism where it was first practiced as a form of meditation. It became popular in psychology in the 20th century and is now widely used in varying ways.

The benefits of regular practice of mindfulness techniques include:

  • Reduced stress levels.
  • Improved sleep and mood.
  • Enhanced self-awareness, empathy and ability to focus.
  • Increased energy levels.
  • Reduction in symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.

When talking about mindfulness many people’s thoughts jump straight to meditation but there are in fact so many other ways to experience yourself in the present moment. Mindful walks, mindful eating, mindful stretching, and mindful listening are just some of the other techniques you can explore. Other options are to identify your feelings, by naming and accepting them without judgment or using your senses, by exploring what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch in the environment you are currently in.

The beauty of forming mindfulness habits is that they can be practiced anywhere and at anytime and you can pick and choose what works for you that day, week, month or year! We hope this post has inspired you to find out more about being mindful and wish you luck in developing your own personal strategy!
